A chemotherapy patient has channelled her energies into raising funds for Hartlepool Hospital's expanding Chemotherapy Day Unit – and has recruited colleagues and friends to help her raise money for specialist chairs.
Beverley Bell, who works in TBI Solicitors' Investment Department, is being treated for breast cancer in the unit. Beverley, who regularly organises fundraising events, offered to assist the unit's nurses in raising funds to buy specialist chairs costing £700 each. Beverley's commitment to the unit stems from her own experience, as well as that of two colleagues who have been treated for cancer.
With assistance from friends and colleagues, Beverley organised a quiz night and a hamper raffle and raised £450. Additional funds were then added through contributions from colleagues and a donation from the ‘bonus ball draw' organised weekly by some of TBI's staff.
She said: “I offered to donate the proceeds of a quiz night to the chemotherapy unit, and the nurses told me the money would go towards much-needed chairs. The hamper was donated by a staff member from Ron Perry and Son Ltd, and we ran a separate raffle for this. With staff from both companies and the chemotherapy unit attending the quiz night, we have raised much more than expected. I'm delighted that there's enough money for the unit to purchase one of the specialist chairs.”
Rosie Livingston, chemotherapy nurse at the unit, added: “The comfort of chemotherapy patients is vitally important, and this chair will make treatment a little easier. We're really grateful to Beverley. Despite currently undergoing treatment, she has inspired staff and friends to raise more than £700, and this donation will make a real difference to many people.”
Despite her treatment, Beverley organises quiz nights every three months, and has raised funds for a number of local appeals and charities, including Cystic Fibrosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (North East), Butterwick Hospice and Greatham sportsfield. She added; “I may organise the events, but the generosity of my colleagues, friends and family has enabled me to raise money and make a real difference.”
