TBI Solicitors, one of the Tees Valley's leading law firms, is acting on behalf of a Hartlepool woman who developed blistering and rashes across her back, legs, palms and balls of her feet after purchasing a leather three-piece suite from Argos.
TBI Solicitors is representing the woman who suffered the debilitating symptoms for more than five months in 2007. Doctors struggled to diagnose the mystery allergy, which failed to respond to antibiotics and was eventually treated with steroids.
When the lady received a ‘safety issue' letter from Argos asking her to check the reference number on her suite and offering a full refund or replacement, she investigated further and discovered that a number of other people across the country were suffering similar symptoms after buying leather sofas from Argos and other retailers.
The affected leather suites were manufactured by Linkwise and sold by Argos, Walmsley's and Land of Leather. An expert has identified the causative agent of the reaction as dimethyl fumarate and a team of dermatologists are now expected to prepare a report.
Nathalie Dixon of TBI Solicitors said: “Our client suffered considerable pain for almost six months with sores and weeping blisters. She was in such discomfort at times that she was unable to look after her young children. While her health has now improved, she is still suffering occasional irritation.
