Tell us about your role:
Director – Financial Adviser
Your career journey?
I entered financial services at the tender age of 21, working in London within the banking sector. Having gained five years’ experience, I returned home to the North East and qualified as an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) in 2002. Since then I have advised clients on all aspects of their company and personal financial affairs. I enjoy working with clients developing long term relationships and creating generational wealth.
What have been the biggest challenges in your career?
Navigating our clients through the recession of 2008 was tough; that, combined with changes in how people shop, has decimated the small independent retailer.
The biggest challenge going forward is going to be longevity. Scientists are re-engineering our biology to extend life expectancy and health. This is going to totally change how we live, for example if you live to 150 it's unrealistic that you will be able to retire at 60. People will have multiple careers and might not retire until they are 80. Thought also needs to be given to how we care for centenarians - will we live in multi-generational housing?
What are your biggest achievements?
Conducting the Management Buyout of Henderson Insurance Brokers Wealth Management business in 2015, and creating the formation of Novus Wealth Management.
What did you want to be when you were at school?
What was your first job?
Working in the warehouse of my Dad’s factory at the age of 13; I’m sure there’s employment laws about that these days!
If you could have an alternative job, what would it be?
I love what I do, but as I’m going to live until 150, I’ll need to plan my next career when I reach 80. It will be along the lines of a longevity institute.
What do you love most about working in the North East?
It’s a close-knit business community and people generally know each other and want to help. If I’ve got a problem, I can usually pick the phone up to someone that is able to assist or point me in the right direction.
What do you love most about living in the North East?
As an area its got everything you need, from the rolling countryside of North Yorkshire, the Coast Line of Northumberland to the bustling city of Newcastle.
What’s your number one piece of advice for anyone in business?
Its hard to be successful at something if you don’t enjoy it. Make sure you have a passion for what you do, if not find something else.
"He was very old."
