TBI settle numerous Medomsley physical abuse cases
Following the agreement of the Medomsley Physical Scheme, Tilly Bailey & Irvine Solicitors in Hartlepool has settled a number of cases for former inmates that were subjected to physical abuse whilst detained at the centre.
Nathalie Clayton, Solicitor at TBI, has received feedback from former inmates who have finally been able to receive some form of closure from the horrific events they experienced whilst detained at Medomsley Detention Centre.
One of the former inmates received £1,750 by way of compensation, but it was not this that was on his mind – it was the sense of justice that had long been missing which he desired.
He told Mrs Clayton that he feels relieved that the officers did not get away with what they did and he feels as though he has received a small reward for the brutality he was subjected to.
He, as well as many other victims TBI has been working with, hopes that the outcome of this deters this abuse in the future in these types of establishments.
The victim, Mr Pritchard, said: “from the moment I submitted the claim I did not expect to recover any compensation, but I wanted justice. The compensation that I received has been a bonus and I feel relieved as I can now close a door that I never wish to reopen. The service I received from TBI was spot on and everything was done very efficiently.”
Mrs Clayton spoke to another former inmate who wishes to remain anonymous, but who also received closure and compensation for physical abuse. He said that he was over the moon with the result as he had not expected to walk away with anything, adding officers that were charged ‘got what they deserved’. With regard to the service he received from TBI he said ‘Smashing, spot on, one million percent happy with the service. Thank you.’
“I would just like to say a big thank you for helping me out”
“All I can say is that you have dealt with it in a very professional way”
“Really pleased with your service. Thank you”
“Excellent professional service. Thank you”
“Very happy with your service”
Discussions are continuing with the Group Litigation Department as to how they intend to deal with claims where detainees suffered physical abuse by members of staff who have not been convicted or who are deceased.
