Dangers of ASR MoM hip implants made by DePuy
Many patients who have had hip replacements develop no serious problems and benefit from well functioning hip implants. However, on 7th September 2010, all ASR MoM hip implants made by DePuy (an American division of Johnson & Johnson) were withdrawn, after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had concerns that the number of patients requiring revision surgery was much higher than expected. The implants can cause tiny metal fragments/debris to be released into the joint, muscle and into the blood stream, resulting in bone and muscle damage, as well as neurological issues. Patients who have had this type of implant require a blood test to determine the levels of chromium and cobalt in the blood.
