How to claim

Check your eligibility.

To be eligible for the benefit, you must be suffering from a “prescribed industrial disease”. The BI100PD list, which you can access via the www.gov.uk website or from the Barnsley Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit office, lists over 70 of these diseases. The disease must have developed either at work or whilst on an approved employment training scheme or course, and in England, Scotland, or Wales.

Fill in the form.

The form that you need is called “BI100PD Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit for a prescribed industrial disease”. It can be found on the www.gov.uk website or you can get it from the Barnsley Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit office. Don’t forget that if you are suffering from occupational deafness, you must fill in a separate form called the “BI100D Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit for occupational deafness”.

Submit your claim.

After you have completed and signed the form, post it to the Barnsley IIDB Centre, Mail Handling Site A, Wolverhampton, WV98 1SY. Depending on which industrial disease you are suffering from, the Centre for Health and Disability Assessments (CHDA) may contact you for a face-to-face medical examination.

Top tips

Keep your description concise and to the point…

If you are suffering from Vibration White Finger, say that you have been exposed to excessive levels of vibration from vibrating tools used during your employment. If it’s asbestosis, say that you were exposed to high levels of asbestos during your employment because of who and what you worked with.

… But don’t miss out on the important details.

If you worked with noisy or vibrating tools, list them. If you carried out repetitive tasks, write them down.

Fill out as much of the form as is possible.

Dig out old letters or payslips to find out more about your previous employers, such as their address and contact number. If you attended a hospital or clinic because of your disease, consult old referral or discharge letters to find out more information about your stay. The more details you can provide, the better.

Seek help or guidance.

If you are struggling with the application form, the www.gov.uk website contains helpful guidance on how to complete it. You can also call the Barnsley Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit office on 0800 121 8379.
