What are vaginal mesh implants?

Women are most commonly fitted with the trans-vaginal mesh to combat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). It is implanted in a surgical procedure via the vagina, and is a woven synthetic netting usually made from Polypropylene.

Vaginal mesh and its predecessor TVT (trans-vaginal tape) are used to treat two different conditions in women who have given birth – urinary stress incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. Both affect the bladder and can make life uncomfortable for those affected.

What should I know to help my claim?

If you have undergone the procedure and are looking to pursue a claim for compensation you will need to consider the following matters:

  • What were you told before consenting to the operation?
  • Was there a discussion about any treatment you had tried and were you given any information as to other treatment options available?
  • Were you warned about erosion of the mesh?
  • Was the surgeon experienced in carrying out the procedure?
  • Were you given an opportunity to go away and think about matters?
  • If you had known of the risks, would you still have proceeded?
