Michael Stevens is an integral part of Tilly Bailey & Irvine's Corporate and Commercial law department.
Beginning as a Paralegal in the firm’s Commercial Property team, Michael also started both his Period of Recognised Training and Legal Practice Course qualification in October 2015. Over the course of his training, Michael worked solely in the commercial departments of Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s Wynyard office, picking up a wide breadth of experience in business legal matters.
He swiftly qualified into the Corporate and Commercial team and has struck a strong partnership with colleague, Craig Malarkey.
Michael has acted on numerous acquisitions and disposals with varying structures and in a range of different industries, which includes multiple Academy conversions. Michael’s significant experience ensures knowledge and understanding when dealing with transactions that come with a property-related element.
Michael has also advised on a wealth of commercial contracts and has assisted clients in drafting and negotiating on matters such as franchising, agency and distribution agreements, and goods/ services contracts. He takes a keen interest in understanding clients’ businesses, identifying key risks and opportunities of a given project.
Having once worked for an Insolvency Practitioner himself, Michael also specialises in insolvency and turnaround matters. Previous experience gives him a rare understanding of the subject, so you are guaranteed swift, effective and pragmatic responses as Insolvency Practitioners and also directors of distressed businesses.
Middlesbrough FC fan Michael has also acted Pro Bono for Hardwick In Partnership Limited in their granting of a Sublease of part of Hardwick Community Centre to a nursery, which completed in August 2015.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I loved Star Wars as a child so I think I wanted to be a Jedi. Unfortunately my college didn’t offer it as a course.
Why law as a career?
I wanted to study Law because of the variety of topics it covers and it is a very interesting subject.
I have wanted to have a career in law as I enjoy the problem solving aspect of it and being able to advise people with complicated legal issues.
Describe any interesting facts about yourself
In 2013 I completed the 10-mile Tough Mudder assault course in Ripon.
I am a fan of Middlesbrough FC and the New England Patriots American Football team.
What one thing could you not live without?
My MP3 Player.
