Shortly after first beginning as a Paralegal in the firm’s Commercial Property team, Michael started both his Period of Recognised Training and Legal Practice Course qualification in the October of 2015. Over the course of his training, Michael worked solely in the commercial departments of Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s Wynyard office, picking up a wide breadth of experience in business legal matters.
Michael qualified into the Corporate and Commercial team headed by Craig Malarkey. Since then Michael has acted on numerous acquisitions and disposals with varying structures and in a range of different industries, which includes multiple Academy conversions. Michael’s significant experience within the Commercial Property team provides him with a knowledge and understanding of property law that proves invaluable when dealing with transactions that have a property-related element to it.
Michael has also advised on a wealth of commercial contracts and has assisted clients in drafting and negotiating on matters such as franchising; agency and distribution agreements; and goods/ services contracts. Beyond explaining the black and white of a contract, Michael takes a keen interest in understanding his clients’ businesses and looks to identify the key risks and opportunities that could face a client on a given project.
Having once worked for an Insolvency Practitioner himself, Michael also specialises in insolvency and turnaround matters. Michael’s previous experience gives him a rare understanding of what Insolvency Practitioners need from their legal advisors. This allows him to respond swiftly, effectively and pragmatically when acting for Insolvency Practitioners and also directors of distressed businesses.
