Medomsley Detention Centre Abuse Claims

Tilly Bailey & Irvine have secured compensation for a number of former inmates that were sexually, physically, and mentally abused whilst detained in Medomsley Detention Centre between 1960’s and 1980’s, and Kirklevington Detention Centre between the 1970's and 1990's.

One of the former inmates was subjected to sexual abuse on a daily basis and this continued even after he was released from the centre. We recovered £27,000 by way of compensation, a sum that will hopefully make a difference to his life, meaning that he can move forward, however we very much doubt he will ever be able to leave his dreadful past behind him.

Kirklevington Detention Centre Claims

Kirklevington opened as a Junior Detention Centre in 1962 for boys aged between 14 to 17 years old. It was known for its ‘short, sharp shock treatment,' but allegations of physical and sexual abuse have arisen from former inmates, who report that they were subjected to abuse by the prison officers during their period of detention.

Cleveland Police are investigating allegations from the 1970’s up to the 1990’s under ‘Operation Magnolia’.
The force said Operation Magnolia has now heard from over 400 former inmates and we understand that a case file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration.

Who Can I Claim Against?

A claim for financial compensation for abuse, neglect and injury may be made against:

  • The individual who carried out the abuse
  • An organisation with a duty of care, including local authorities, protection agencies, care homes and hospitals e.g., Kirklevington Detention Centre

There are time limits for making a claim for compensation, but each case will be considered on its own facts, and so, depending on the circumstances, a claim may still succeed, despite being outside of the time limit.
